Castle Hill is about a one hour drive from Salmon Cove. It looks over Placentia Bay and the town of Placentia. first settled by Basque fishers in the 1500s. Castle Hill is the site of Fort Royal, one of three established in the area by France in the 1600s. From 1662 to 1713 it was France's New World capital, before moving it to Louisburg, N.S. and later to Quebec. Today a national historic park preserves and interprets the ruins of the fort and its history, including the story of King William IV, who stayed several months at Fort Royal in 1786 after England took control as part of the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht (1713). You can make Placentia and Castle Hill your first stop in a driving tour of the "Irish Loop" (allow three to four hours to drive the complete circle route back to Salmon Cove).
