Food scene
The Walnut Tree has endured over decades, its reputation having been built by local celebrity chef Franco Taruschio with whom it gained Michelin star status and for whom my husband was pot washer in the 1980’s! Since then it has held a star with Stephen Terry (who now runs The Hardwick) and currently under Shaun Hill, prestigious chef of many Michelin stars in London, Ludlow and Devon. We are very lucky to have such fine food just 10 minutes from our town.

Family favourites are panzanella and puntarelle salad, followed by duck hash with duck egg and caramelised orange dressing, with a chocolate mousse with a honeycomb and salted caramel sauce!
There is also a very classy bar where you can relax with a drink and enjoy small plates of the main menu.

The Angel Hotel is a firm favourite in the town. Its dining rooms are beautifully decorated. It has won awards for its high teas and its stunning ballroom makes for a wonderful venue for private parties and weddings.

After you’ve walked the Sugarloaf you may fancy stopping here. You can take self guided tours of the vineyard, have a wine taste, maybe buy a bottle or two. Then have lunch or coffee and cake.

Local walks and sightseeing
The Sugar Loaf is the mountain that Abergavenny is most well known for. It has the iconic ‘sugar loaf’ appearance.
The view from the summit covers the Black Mountains to the north, the Cotswolds to the east, as far as the Brecon Beacons including Pen y Fan and Corn Du to the west and the Bristol Channel to the south. The Skirrid is easily visible to the immediate east, including its spectacular landslip at its northern end. On a clear day it is possible to see hills as far north as Shropshire and as far south as Somerset.

You have a glorious view of this mountain from your bedroom windows at Halidon House. There are many walks up and across the Blorenge. A particularly lovely one is to the Punchbowl. This spectacular site on the eastern side of the Blorenge is dominated by a large, wooded glacial cwm containing a man-made lake. It is very picturesque and the perfect spot for a picnic. You can park at the canal and start your walk from there.

Adam has worked with Sky Sports' Tight Lines, Fishing Gurus, Improve Your Coarse Fishing magazine, ITV, Anglers Mail, Angling Times, Talk Sport Radio, Channel 4, BBC, and has guided numerous well known people including MP's, Royalty, Bear Grylls and Mr Gregg the baker!
