This small 3-bedroom house in the Mt. Kenya region is more like a shrine. It was owned by the first person that the British Colonial Government arrested and detained - on April 12, 1952 - for political activities of the world-famous Mau Mau freedom fighters. He was Kihu Mbutu, father of Mwai Kihu.
When he was released - on January 31, 1959 - he became a successful smallholder coffee farmer. He died at 101 on September 1, 2008. He built this house in 1978. The coffee he planted still thrives.

The neighbourhood is principally a coffee growing area. The neighbours are all smallholder farmer-families with an average plot size of about a hectare per family. The main cash crop is coffee. The area grows the highest quality coffee in the world, hence it is used as a blend to raise the quality of other world coffees.
Other crops grown by neighbours include maize, beans, potatoes, macadamia nuts, sweet potatoes, arrow roots and yams.
Livestock include zero-grazed cows, goats and chicken.

We are a Kenyan couple, Mwai (66), Mrs. Ann Mwai (58), married with 2 adult sons ()born 1985 and 1986) who have left home. We now live the two of us and that is why we have two rooms to spare for home-stay guests.
Mwai is an investment and management consultant and Ann, a former banker, is a farmer. We live on a small farm ( (Website hidden by Airbnb) near Nairobi, where we breed dairy cows and dogs (German Shepherds and Boerboels). We also recycle charcoal waste to charcoal briquettes, which helps in cleaning up the city and save some trees from felling.
We both love traveling and hiking. Mwai climbs the world famous Ngong Hills (Movie: OUT OF AFRICA, the Karen Blixen story) every Sunday morning from 5.30 am. The sun rises when he is at the summit - cold, sometimes wet, windy and misty; good conditions for a cool brain. Fitting preparation for the October Nairobi Marathon which he runs every year.
Our Life motto: One must matter to people beyond your family; We strive to improve how the African relates with money. If we appreciate that ONE CANNOT BE RICH IN A POOR COUNTRY, we can live a life of higher integrity!

Mwai, the proprietor, lives at Kepro Farm near Nairobi, 150 kms away. He is an investment and management consultant and also an Airbnb Superhost at Kepro Farm. Sometimes, he or wife, Ann, will be available at Karatina; otherwise, most of the times, the very able farm manager and his assistant look after the guests. The two will be available to demonstrate to guests how smallholder farming is done and show guests and allow them to participate in activities like sourcing of cattle feed, feeding and milking cows, coffee tendering and picking, banana and other crops’ agronomy.
The firm has also got one of the few agro forests and the first bamboo plantation in the area. A walk through the trees and the bamboo plantation is a joyful activity for nature lovers.
